It's worth noting, I think, that the 1.5°C target is not a safe threshold either. Last year was the hottest year ever recorded on Earth, and 2024 was also the first year in which we exceeded the 1.5°C warming threshold. Sure, just because we've exceeded the 1.5°C threshold last year does not mean we've breached the Paris Agreement just yet — we need a couple more years of global temperatures that are at or above 1.5°C before that happens.
But we have probably already crossed multiple dangerous tipping points — such as the Great Barrier Reef, Greenland, and West Antarctica. We are already facing these monumental shifts in our climate — and we have only just reached 1.5°C!
Our emissions are currently going up, but they must come down, or we'll reach 2°C — which will be a complete disaster.
