Coffee doesn't grow everywhere. It thrives in a narrow equatorial strip known as the Coffee Belt, where stable temperatures, predictable rainfall, and the right altitude create near-perfect growing conditions. But those conditions are slipping away.
According to analysis by Climate Central, the 25 countries that account for roughly 97% of global coffee production have all experienced more coffee-harming heat over the past five years due to climate change. This isn't a future projection—it's happening right now. And every link in the chain, from the farmer's field to your favourite café, is feeling the strain.
Coffee is one of the most climate-sensitive crops on Earth. The two main species grown commercially—Arabica and Robusta—each demand very specific conditions. Arabica, which makes up about 60–70% of world production and commands the highest prices, thrives between roughly 18–21°C. Even small temperature shifts can reduce quality and yield. Robusta tolerates more heat but still requires consistent rainfall and is sensitive to extended dry spells.
Rising temperatures don't just stress the plants directly. They also expand the range of pests and diseases. Coffee leaf rust, a devastating fungal disease, spread through Central America during the 2012–2014 epidemic in what researchers consider a clear warning sign of a warming world. The coffee berry borer, another destructive pest, is likewise creeping into higher altitudes that were once too cool for it.
The impacts are already visible across every major producing region.
Brazil, which supplies roughly one-third of the world's coffee, has endured four consecutive years of severe drought, heatwaves, and frost. Coffee plants have failed to recover, and Arabica output for the 2025/26 season is forecast to fall by approximately 6.4% compared to normal levels.
Vietnam saw a 20% drop in coffee production during the 2023/24 season due to prolonged dry weather, with exports falling for the second consecutive year.
India's coffee-growing regions experienced an average of 30 additional days of harmful heat each year between 2021 and 2025, according to Climate Central. As one Indian grower described it, coffee fruit is drying up on the plant faster because of the increased temperatures.
These disruptions ripple outward. The FAO reported that world coffee prices reached a multi-year high in 2024, increasing nearly 39% on the previous year's average. Arabica prices surged 58% year-on-year by December 2024, while Robusta jumped 70% in real terms. That means the cost of your daily cup is already being shaped by a warming planet.
The projections are sobering. Global suitability models summarised by World Coffee Research suggest that as much as half of today's viable coffee-growing land could become unsuitable by 2050. The regions facing the greatest vulnerability include Central America, Brazil, and East Africa—areas that also happen to be home to millions of smallholder farmers who produce around 80% of the world's coffee.
These farmers are on the frontlines. Unlike large agribusinesses, smallholders often lack the capital to invest in irrigation, shade infrastructure, or new varieties. When harvests fail, the consequences aren't just economic—they affect food security, education, and community stability in some of the world's most vulnerable regions.
The picture is alarming, but it's not hopeless. Researchers and growers are pursuing a three-pronged strategy:
- On-farm adaptation. Shade-grown coffee and agroforestry—planting coffee under the canopy of larger trees—can lower local temperatures, retain moisture, and provide habitat for pollinators. It's one of the most effective nature-based defences available today.
- Breeding resilient varieties. Institutions like World Coffee Research are working to develop coffee cultivars that tolerate heat, drought, and disease. Progress takes time, but these efforts are essential for long-term survival.
- Supply-chain and policy support. Fairer pricing mechanisms, climate insurance for farmers, and investment in local infrastructure can help growers adapt without absorbing all the risk themselves.
- Reducing emissions. Ultimately, keeping global warming below 1.5–2°C is the most consequential variable. Every fraction of a degree matters—for coffee, and for far more besides.
It's easy to think of climate change as an abstract problem, something measured in parts per million and distant ice sheets. But coffee offers a remarkably tangible lens. When prices spike, when flavour profiles shift, when beloved origins disappear from shelves—the climate crisis arrives in your cup.
The next time you take a sip, consider what went into it: not just the labour of a farmer thousands of miles away, but a delicate dance of temperature, rainfall, and altitude that is quietly being disrupted. Coffee's future isn't guaranteed. Securing it will take collective effort—from scientists and policymakers, yes, but also from consumers who understand what's at stake.
